Aeristech |
Aeristech’s proprietary electric turbocharger technology reduces
CO2 emissions and fuel consumption of engines. It works by introducing a fully electric link between the exhaust recovery side and air compression side of a turbocharger, thus creating a hybrid electric turbocharger. It improves engine efficiency while offering robust transient performance, thereby making it an enabling technology for engine downsizing.
This technology applies to several industries, including automotive, marine, aviation, and some fixed power generation requirements.
Aeristech's business model is to license intellectual property and to offer consulting expertise in support of their proprietary technology. |

Affresol |
Affresol Ltd has developed an innovative new process that produces a product called Reszinite™. Reszinite™ is used to manufacture low cost and social housing.
The process uses mixed plastic waste products and waste plasterboard which have been diverted from landfill. Each house uses approximately 20 tonnes of waste.
The waste products are processed and then mixed with a resin and a polymer that together create an exothermic reaction which then produces a mouldable liquid compound material similar to concrete.
The mouldable compound
(Reszinite™) will set in 24 hours and has intrinsic attributes that make the product stronger than “high strength” concrete, the product has excellent thermal insulation characteristics; it is water proof; it is fire retardant; and it does not rot.
Affresol will manufacture and sell Sustainable “low cost” and “social” housing made from this material. Indications are that an Affresol house can be up to 25% cheaper than a comparable traditional “low cost” house.
The designs for the houses are based around the traditional Column and “ring” Beam system with moulded infill panels within each of the sections. Each house is made up of 40 pre cast sections. Over 60% of the superstructure materials are made from the moulded product. A single 3 bedroom unit of 1000sq ft can be erected in 4 days. The subsequent fitting out process can be completed and ready for occupation within a further 2 to 3 weeks.

Axon
Automotive is one of Europe's newest car
companies and takes a distinctive approach to
the clean tech challenge in the auto
sector. Good aerodynamics, light weight
(arising from Axon's patented carbon fibre
chassis technology) and very fuel efficient
engines mean that Axon forecasts 100mpg fuel
economy and low CO2
for its
cars. Another unique commercial attribute
is that the capital investment to produce a
carbon chassis is over 100 times cheaper than
for a steel equivalent; this enables market
entry and profitability at significantly lower
volumes than steel and aluminium
competitors.

Cryox |
Cryox was formed to exploit the expertise in cryogenics held in the STFC Research Council Laboratories like Rutherford Appleton. Cryox designs and manufacturers cryocoolers and cryogenic systems targeting the power electronics sector, particularly superconducting generators for wind turbines, fault current limiters and superconducting power cables.
High Temperature Superconductors offer significant efficiency improvements and 3-4 X reductions in the size and weight of large wind turbine generators, reducing the cost of offshore wind power production by an expected 25%. For this technology to be viable in the offshore environment rugged forms of cryogenic equipment, must be developed. The experience STFC has in the design and manufacture of space based cryogenic systems has given Cryox a unique understanding of these requirements and the design solutions which support them. |

Gnodal |
Gnodal is a systems company developing the largest, fastest, most efficient Ethernet switches in the world. The trend towards virtualization, cloud and high performance computing (HPC), is putting extreme stresses on data center networks in terms of scalability, performance, cost and power consumption. Current solutions are not able to effectively scale beyond a few hundred ports, suffering from poor network performance, high power budgets and rising cost of ownership. By providing a family of switches which offer seamless scalability, Gnodal solves these problems and enables the construction of a new generation of Ethernet networks.

PowerPredict |
PowerPredict Limited supplies the energy industry with accurate and reliable predictions of the electrical power output from wind turbines. Energy produced from wind farms currently trades at a discount to other energy sources because the variability of wind makes it difficult to schedule its
availability. PowerPredict provides accurate predictions for the production of wind energy that increases the price of traded wind energy, encourages increased investment in wind power and reduces the need to run stand-by, fossil fuel-based, generation capacity.

Robofold |
Robofold has developed a patented method enabling industrial robots to form sheet metal into 3D objects. The technique removes the need for press stamping in most sheet metal forming processes and consequently reduces tooling costs to almost nothing (for companies with access to most standard industrial robots) and time to market by up to 90% by removing the requirement for a custom stamping former. The process also generates significantly less
CO2 per part made as a result of eliminating the embodied energy in the stamping press and the energy required to lift and lower the press for each part formed. Deploying the Robofold process enables companies to reduce the carbon footprint of many existing manufactured products thus helping them meet new legislative targets for
CO2 reduction with minimal capital investment and process disruption. |

Silicon
Basis |
In consumer electronics there is a pressing need to reduce cost, lower power consumption and at the same time increase performance.
Invariably, this means creating a new silicon chip.
However, the cost of designing and verifying new chips is at least $10million and is escalating rapidly.
Silicon Basis aims to solve this pain with our advanced programmable logic technology, the soft gate array (SGA). SGA has considerably lower active and standby power consumption and is significantly lower cost than existing programmable technologies.
Silicon Basis will integrate SGA with industry standard CPUs and interfaces to produce chips that will address a wide range of potential applications such as multimedia accelerators, flexible radio interfaces, video processing and internet and communications infrastructure.
Using these off the shelf chips will get our customers to market in a third of the time and at a quarter of the cost of designing a new chip, whilst still meeting critical power and performance targets. |
